To address this, the Indian Postal Service introduced the pin code system on August 15, 1972. This system divides the country into 9 different pin zones—8 geographical regions and 1 dedicated to the Indian Army.

2. Structure of a PIN Code (Postal Index Number)
India’s 6-digit pin code system ensures efficient mail sorting and delivery. Each digit has a specific role:
1st digit – Represents the geographical zone.
1st & 2nd digits – Identify the postal circle or sub-region.
3rd digit – Specifies the sorting district within the circle.
Last 3 digits – Indicate the exact post office.
